How to Check Your Middle School Student’s Grades in Focus
As a parent, one of the best ways you can support your middle schooler is by staying informed about their academic progress. Fortunately, Broward County’s Focus system makes it easy to monitor grades, assignments, attendance, and overall performance—all from your phone or computer.
Checking your student’s account just a few times each week can help you catch problems early, celebrate successes, and have meaningful conversations before small issues become bigger ones.
Logging Into Your Student’s Account
To access your student’s information:
- Log into Clever using your student’s school credentials.
- Select Log in with Active Directory.
- Enter your student’s 06 number followed by @my.browardschools.com.
- Enter your student’s password.
- Once inside Clever, click the Focus icon (the owl with the magnifying glass).
Using your student’s own account allows both you and your child to see the exact same information, creating transparency and encouraging teamwork.
Viewing Current Grades
Once you’re in Focus, scroll down to see your student’s current classes and grades. Selecting any class opens a detailed view showing:
- Current grade
- Individual assignments
- Assignment categories
- Due dates
- Missing work
- Teacher updates
This gives you a complete picture of how your student is performing in each class.
Understand What Impacts the Grade Most
Not every assignment carries the same weight.
For many classes, grades are divided into categories such as:
- Assessments
- Homework
- Quizzes
- Labs
Each category contributes a different percentage toward the final grade. For example, assessments may count for more than half of the overall grade, while homework and quizzes may count for smaller portions.
If your student has multiple missing assignments, encourage them to complete the assignments that have the greatest impact on their overall grade first. This can often improve their grade more quickly while they continue completing the remaining work.
Use Sorting to Find Important Information
One of Focus’s most helpful features is the ability to sort assignments.
You can organize assignments by:
- Assignment name
- Category
- Assigned date
- Due date
- Last updated
- Grade
This makes it easy to:
- Find a specific assignment.
- See what was assigned while your student was absent.
- Identify missing work quickly.
- Review recently updated grades.
Watch for These Academic Red Flags
Regularly checking Focus helps you spot warning signs before they become major concerns.
Some things to look for include:
Missing Assignments
If you see multiple missing assignments, it’s time for a conversation.
You may notice:
- NG (No Grade) — the assignment has not been submitted and has not been graded.
- Z — the assignment is currently counting as a zero.
Both can significantly lower your student’s grade until the work is completed.
Grades Below Expectations
Whether your goal is for your child to maintain a B average or simply stay above a C, lower-than-expected grades are a good opportunity to ask questions like:
- Are you understanding the material?
- Is there anything you’re struggling with?
- How can I help?
Keeping the conversation supportive rather than punitive encourages honest communication.
No Recent Grade Updates
If several weeks pass without any new grades appearing, don’t assume something is wrong.
The class may simply be working on a larger project, or the teacher may still be grading assignments. It’s a good opportunity to check in with your student and ask how things are going.
Check Attendance Regularly
Focus also allows you to monitor attendance.
You can review:
- Daily attendance
- Individual class absences
- Tardies
- Excused and unexcused absences
Frequent absences often affect academic performance, so checking attendance regularly helps you stay informed and address any concerns early.
Make Checking Grades a Routine
Rather than only looking at grades when report cards come out, establish a regular schedule.
A good goal is to review Focus together two or three times each week.
This simple habit:
- Builds accountability.
- Prevents surprises.
- Encourages communication.
- Helps your student develop responsibility for their own learning.
Understanding Middle School Promotion Points
Middle school promotion works a little differently than many parents expect.
Instead of simply passing each quarter, students earn promotion points throughout the year.
Each quarterly grade earns points:
- A = 4 points
- B = 3 points
- C = 2 points
- D = 1 point
- F = 0 points
Students must earn at least 4 total points in each core subject by the end of the school year to receive credit for that course.
For example:
- Quarter 1: C (2 points)
- Quarter 2: D (1 point)
- Quarter 3: D (1 point)
The student has earned 4 total points and is on track to receive credit, provided they continue meeting promotion requirements during the final quarter.
Even if a student has already earned enough points, they should continue working hard every quarter. Each grading period still matters.
If Your Student Fails a Quarter
If your student earns an F during a grading period, they may be assigned a Course Recovery class through Canvas.
Course Recovery allows students to make up the failed quarter by completing online lessons at their own pace.
If you believe your child should be participating in Course Recovery, contact your student’s school counselor to verify that they have been properly enrolled.
