Cooking Up Connections: How a Middle School Culinary Program Builds Friendships
At Firewall Centers, the culinary program offers more than basic cooking skills—it creates a space where students build friendships, learn teamwork, and gain confidence.
Once a month, students work in small groups to plan and prepare meals. While learning how to chop, measure, and cook, they also practice communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. The program encourages students to rotate partners and take on different roles, helping them connect with classmates they might not normally interact with. These cooking sessions promote self-expression and help students build connections.
The impact goes beyond the kitchen. Many students feel more connected at school, and show increased confidence
Firewall is already exploring ways to expand the program, recognizing that what’s being built isn’t just meals—it’s community.
