In our elementary after-school programs, numerous students face challenges in reading at their grade level. Our initiative aims to support them by offering daily tutoring sessions encompassing cross-curricular Language Arts lessons. Additionally, we focus on character development through a tailored curriculum designed by Firewall and PATHS. Moreover, our program integrates STEAM-related project-based learning, which includes engaging science experiments, artistic projects, and other activities.
In middle school after-school programs, students receive daily tutoring, particularly focused on Math and Language Arts. Moreover, character development is emphasized through Firewall’s specialized curriculum, integrating social-emotional strategies, life skills, and education on drug/alcohol prevention via TOP.
In high school after-school programs, students are provided with tutoring and mentoring as well as with the tools, academic support, and resources they require to be competitive after graduation – whether they attend community college (in partnership with Broward College), a four-year university, receive military training, enroll in an apprenticeship program, or work towards industry certifications.
THINK (Take Charge, Have a Plan, Involve the Right People, Never Quit, and Keep Giving Back) is Firewall’s social-emotional curriculum that teaches students to take responsibility for their actions, manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, as well as involve them in goal-setting and decision-making for their futures.
Firewall Centers serves high-need students in Kindergarten through 12th grades who reside in impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhoods. A student who lives in poverty and cannot read on grade level by the 3rd grade is 13 times less likely to graduate high school. And once in high school, it is essential to provide these students with college and career guidance, as those who do not transition into a stable job by their early 20’s won’t ever. Firewall’s after-school programs are school-based, providing ideal program access to students and their families.
